CHAPTER EIGHT

Leo

Leo returned from dinner that evening feeling lighter than he had in months, possibly years. The end of his relationship with Nati was an outstanding wound that had had far-reaching repercussions in his life. The hope of finding a way to navigate that situation, of finding an equilibrium that would allow him to close this chapter in his life and move on, was one he could not relinquish. This was their chance to make things right and put to rest those feelings once and for all. He hated the way things had ended between them and the way they behaved with each other now, as if they were an unknown quantity to be avoided at all costs. Or worse, to treat each other like strangers who had never shared anything of importance, one person like any other on the streets. When he left East Ward now, he would have tied all his lose ends, left no unresolved issues. He would be ready to meet the future.

He was aware that he’d cornered Nati and hated that for her, but she was slippery and would have continued to evade him even though there was so much that needed be said. He wanted the life he was trying to build to be different from what he’d had before, and making peace with Nati was an integral part of that. If he had let her get away tonight, he knew he would have lost his chance to make things different between them.

His father finally left the hospital a few days after his conversation with Nati to his mother’s home, where the family would coordinate care. There were chemotherapy appointments Leo would need to keep, and visits to specialists proposing different treatments for the cancer that was eating away at him. But Papá seemed to flourish in the company of his children and his ex-wife. More and more, Leo was glad that he’d returned.

His phone dinged in his mother’s kitchen, where he was balancing a cup of coffee, a croissant and a bowl of fruit. He set everything down on the counter and looked at his notifications. To his surprise, the message was from Nati. He opened it without hesitation.

Caleb mentioned you wanted to look at the grant proposal.

Leo typed quickly. I did. The offer still stands.

Three dots appeared, then, Want a tour of the clinic?

Leo was stunned. He blinked quickly, making sure that he wasn’t dreaming her text before answering Hell yeah!

The laughing emoji that came next loosened something in his chest. She followed with I have tomorrow off. I can show you the clinic and run through the proposal and presentation, if that works for you.

I’ll check with Genevieve and give you a confirmation.

Nati’s thumbs-up emoji came through, and he fired off a quick message to his sister about possibly staying with their father the next day. Genevieve responded quickly.

I can do it. What’s your important appointment?

Leo shook his head as if his sister were right in front of him. Nosy.
